Let me start by saying Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters is a legend, one of the very few people still making music who can be called that.
His acceptance speech at the Grammys ruled! He said….
“To me, this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of making music is what’s most important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do. It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here (points to heart) and it’s about what goes on in here (points to head).”
This wonderful quote about dedication and respect for music has seemed to turn into a reason for every rock jock still wearing their grad 97 jacket and smoking darts in their truck to jump on the “down with electro” train. If Dave didn’t like this form of music he likely wouldn’t have collaborated on a Grammy performance later that night with Deadmau5. A kick ass performance by the way!! What Dave meant was rock and roll is pure and those who make it should try to keep it real. If you’re spending days turning your track into something you can’t remake live, your focus is on the wrong thing. Awesome. Deadmau5 plays an instrument too… he plays two of them actually, and they’re called turn tables. He’s put countless hours into making his instrument pump out amazing music and it’s just as much of an art as playing a guitar… or a tuba for that matter.
There will always be people who refuse to accept change. The same guy who hates electro because it came from a computer also said you can hardly tell the difference between VHS and DVD, still has his tape collection and once made the argument that mailing letters was way more personal than email and is now stuck with Phil_4_11_ISAWESOMESAUCE_@hotmail.com because he got on board a little too late. His dad thought a guitar that you had to plug in was the devil, and his Great Grandpa refused to accept that you can’t fall off the Earth. Here’s a fine example of “that guy” and 257 more that agreed with him.
Spend more time bettering your craft than you do trying to better your product… and spend zero time fearing change.
